Sounds of Connection

Title of the activity: Sounds of Connection

Date and place: 26.07.2024 -Young Folks LV office, Riga, Latvia

Duration: 60 minutes

Aim of the activity: To explore nonverbal communication, build trust, and express emotions through sound and movement, fostering connection and emotional awareness among participants.

Participants info: 8 young people aged 15-27.

Description of the activity:

The workshop began with an icebreaker where participants stood in a circle and shared their names along with a unique sound (like a clap or whistle). The group repeated the name and sound together, creating a fun and playful rhythm to break the ice and build group connection. Next, participants worked in pairs for a silent exercise using a pair of chopsticks, with each person holding one end using only their fingertips. With eyes closed, they moved together without speaking, focusing on balance and subtle nonverbal cues to stay connected. The aim was to build trust and awareness of nonverbal communication.

In the third activity, each participant received a musical instrument. Without using words, they had a musical conversation with their partner, expressing different emotions through rhythm, tone, and tempo. The facilitator suggested themes like joy or curiosity to inspire the exchanges. To close the session, participants gathered in a circle and shared reflections about the activities. They discussed how it felt to communicate without words, how they connected with their partner, and what they learned about trust, emotion, and silent expression.
