7th Workshop

Date: December 6th, Location: Poland, Project: CREATYIOK

On December 6th, a therapeutical photography workshop titled "Capture the Uncaptured" was part of the CREATYIOK project in Riga, Latvia. This session was attended by 8 participants, and they were invited to explore photography as a tool for enhancing self-awareness and perception. Inspired by Judy Weiser's belief that "photographs are mirrors with a memory," the workshop emphasized the power of observation and encouraged participants to see the world around them with fresh eyes.

The session focused on fostering a deeper connection with the surrounding environment, helping participants notice details, perspectives, and symbols that often go unnoticed in daily life. Through a series of interactive exercises, they explored the relationship between visual imagery, emotions, and personal growth.

Activities and Their Significance

1. Visualization Exercise: "Symbol of Transformation"
The workshop began with a brief visualization exercise aimed at helping participants identify a symbol that represented their current emotions, needs, or direction in life. In a safe and open mental space, participants imagined a personal symbol, then sketched or described it, reflecting on its meaning.

This exercise served as an introduction to mindful observation, encouraging participants to connect with their inner worlds and translate abstract emotions into visual forms. It highlighted the importance of paying attention to subtle, personal symbols in their surroundings.

2. "Dialogue of Images"
In this exercise, participants worked in pairs to select two photographs—one that resonated with them and another that they felt connected to the first. They analyzed the relationship between the two images, discussing the emotions, narratives, or contrasts the photos might represent.

This activity underscored the importance of interpretation and perspective in observation. By connecting seemingly unrelated images, participants developed a heightened awareness of patterns and meanings in their environment. It also fostered empathy as they shared and discussed their choices with others.

3. "Perspective in My Life"

Participants were tasked with photographing a single object or scene from multiple angles—above, below, close-up, and from a distance. After capturing these images, they shared their work with the group and reflected on how different perspectives changed their understanding of the subject.

This exercise directly addressed the theme of observation by showing how shifting viewpoints can reveal hidden aspects of familiar objects. It encouraged participants to apply this skill to their daily lives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the richness and complexity of their surroundings.

Workshop Summary

The workshop concluded with a group discussion, during which participants shared their reflections on the exercises. Many noted how the session helped them become more mindful of their environment and more attuned to the details and perspectives that often go unnoticed.
